過渡元素(transition elements)是元素周期表中從ⅢB族到VⅢ族的化學元素 。這些元素在原子結構上的共同特點是價電子依次充填在次外層的d 軌道上 ，因此，有時人們也把鑭系元素和錒系元素包括在過渡元素之中 。另外，ⅠB族元素(銅、銀、金)在形成+2和 +3 價化合物時也使用了d電子；ⅡB族元素(鋅、鎘、汞)在形成穩(wěn)定配位化合物的能力上與傳統(tǒng)的過渡元素相似，因此，也常把ⅠB和ⅡB族元素列入過渡元素之中。
